What to Expect at Your Child's First Appointment

When you bring your child to Columbia Eye Associates for their first visit, we will perform a thorough evaluation, usually lasting about 1.5 hours. Our team will gather detailed information about your child's health and any concerns you have noticed at home. Bring pictures depicting suspected eye problems if possible, as this can be helpful.

Before the appointment, please bring your child's medication list and any insurance information. If your child has had previous eye surgeries, try to bring records from those procedures.

Eye Exam Process

We use various techniques to test your child's vision, including games, letter recognition, and picture matching. This allows us to assess children of all ages and abilities. Each eye is tested separately to ensure both eyes are working correctly. We evaluate:

  • Eye alignment and muscle function
  • Depth perception and tracking
  • Pupil reactions to light

A 30 to 45-minute dilated eye exam is usually part of your child’s first appointment. The dilation allows us to check the health of the eye’s internal structures, such as the lens, retina, and optic nerve. It also helps us measure your child’s focus to check for refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism).

If one eye is out of focus, it can lead to amblyopia (“lazy eye”), which might require glasses, exercises, or other therapies. Our goal is only to prescribe glasses if they are truly necessary for your child’s vision.

After the Exam

After the dilated eye exam, your child’s pupils will remain dilated for several hours. This can cause blurred near vision and sensitivity to light. Depending on what we find during the exam, we may perform additional tests, such as visual field testing, high-resolution imaging, or an ultrasound.

Once the exam is complete, Dr. Khuddus will discuss the results with you and answer any questions. We aim to provide a comprehensive plan to support your child’s vision health.
